FAQs:
What requirements are needed to apply
to the SEYS science education program?
You must
have completed at least 15-20 credits in the science major and have a minimum
average of 2.75 in the science major.
How do I register to take SEYS courses
to become certified to teach?
Come to PH
150 with a major card with your science advisor’s signature and ask an advisor
in SEYS to sign the card for education.
This should be done by your upper sophomore year. Most students begin
taking SEYS courses in their lower junior year.
What are the requirements for staying
in the SEYS teacher certification program?
Science students must maintain a GPA of 2.75 in their
science major and earn a minimum letter grade of B in every secondary
education course.
When does student teaching begin?
There are
two phases of student teaching. The initial clinical experience (ICE) takes
place generally at a middle-Jr high school in the fall. To qualify for ICE, you must have taken 201,
221, 340 and likely, 350.
You must
have a minimum of 100 hrs of documented fieldwork completed. ICE consists of
100 hrs of phased-in teaching experiences with 1 or 2 other science ed. candidates,
under the guidance of a cooperating science teacher and field supervisor. The second, more intense phase of student
teaching takes place generally at a high school in the spring. To qualify, you
must have successfully completed all courses except for SEYS 372.4 and SEYS
382. You will spend 15 weeks, 5 days/wk, 4hrs/day, at the
school under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and field supervisor.
