FEATURES & DISCLAIMERS

PowerPoint (PPT) is one of several similar programs designed for creating multimedia and text "slides", and for delivering presentations synchronously or asynchronously, in classrooms and beyond.

These pages assume a user who is familiar with basic mouse and keyboard operations, and with the Windows 95 or higher environment.  Some of the material presented here may also be useful to the PPT user working in a MAC environment.

The focus of these tutorial materials is on academic uses of PPT, with a particular interest on its use in the classroom.

CONTENTS

Part 1: A word processor that can teach?

  • PPT is a sophisticated word processor, used to generate "slides" that can be printed and used as overheads, or projected from a computer onto a screen.  This second feature makes PPT a powerful tool in the classroom.  These introductory pages guide you through the basics of working with PPT, including how to enter and format text, how to save and print your files, and how to run a basic slide show.

Part 2: Beyond the Text: Multimedia Objects in PPT

  • One of the attractive features of PPT is its ability to integrate multimedia objects into its slides.  It can therefore function as a viable and more directly-controllable alternative to slide projectors, tape recorders, and VCRs.  These pages take the reader beyond the capacities of PPT as a text utility, and demonstrate how to work with images, tables, graphs, sounds, and moving pictures.

Part 3: Minimizing Work, Maximizing Quality

  • A number of advanced features in PPT result in a significant reduction of labor, while at the same time make presentations more efficient and complex.  This final component demonstrates some of the advantages of working with templates.  Also discussed here are the advantages (and disadvantages) of animating elements on PPT slides.
