Welcome to Hyde Park: Home of Contamination

Environmental Racism is Alive and Well in Augusta, Georgia

This website tells the story of an African-American community fighting for environmental justice and for their lives. In 1990, the residents of Hyde Park, a small neighborhood in Augusta, Georgia discovered that their water, soil and air were contaminated with toxic chemicals including lead, arsenic and PCBs.  Since that time, this close-knit  community of tax paying U.S. citizens has struggled to save themselves and their children from the toxic contamination surrounding them.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP THE MARY L. UTLEY COMMUNITY CENTER OPEN !!!!

We our proud that our center is Augusta's only independent community center. But, our only tenant moved out this summer and we now need to raise "bridge" money to fund our utilities thru 2008 so our wonderful center volunteers can continue holding the after-school tutoring and computer training programs that our community desperately needs. Times are tough for everyone, but any donation amount will help us keeps the lights on and the water running.
