Guide to Early English Books 1475-1640

 

Scope: Nearly every English book published from the invention of printing to 1640 is in this collection. The collection is based on a list called Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland, and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640 (STC I) by Pollard and Redgrave (Reference level 3, Z 2002 P77). Included are the earliest editions of such classics as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, original versions of royal statutes and proclamations, military, religious, legal, parliamentary, and other public documents, numerous early English ballads and carols, and sermons, homilies, and the Book of Common Prayer. 

 

How to search the collection: Titles in Early English Books 1475-1640 are not represented in the Queens College Library catalog. Most of them, however, can be found in WorldCat (access WorldCat through ‘Other Library Catalogs’ on the library homepage). Items can be located by keyword, title, author and subject. Items listed in the Library Catalog are complete with the microform reel number and item number on the reel.

 

For items not located in WorldCat, use the following procedure:

 

 

1. Use the Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640. (STC I) (Reference level 3, Z 2002 P77) to find the author or publisher that you want.  Write down the STC number located to the left of the entry in the Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland, and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640.(STC I).

2. Use the STC number from the Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640 (STC I) to find the reel of microfilm that you want. You will need to use the Cross Index of Reel 1-1297 (Reference Level 3, Z 2002 P772).

 

3. Retrieve the microfilm that you need from Rosenthal library level 1.

 

4. When you put the reel of microfilm that you need on the microfilm reader, go to the STC number that you found in the Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640 (STC I).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Guide to Early English Books 1641-1700

 

Scope:  This title is an extension of the Early English Books 1475-1640.  It is based on the Short-title catalogue of books printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and British America and of English books printed in other countries, 1641-1700 (STC II) (Reference Level 3 - Z 2002 W5 1972). Not all items in Wing are in the microfilm collection.  "Separate prints of the Bible, separate statutes and proclamations, American imprints in Evans, Baptist books listed by Whitley, and later prints of books first listed before 1641 are omitted. Selections have been made from almanacs, sermons, liturgical works, Quaker tracts, and Irish and Scottish official publications." (Preface to index).

 

How to search the collection: You can use WorldCat (access WorldCat through ‘Other Library Catalogs’ on the library homepage) to locate items in Early English Books 1641-1700 by keyword, title, author and subject. Most items that are in the Early English Books 1641-1700 from Units 1-123 are listed in WorldCat complete with the microfilm call number, reel number and item number on the reel.

 

For items not located in WorldCat, use the following procedure:

3. Retrieve the microfilm that you need from Rosenthal library level 1.

 

4. When you put the reel of microfilm that you need on the microfilm reader, go to the STC number that you found in the Short-title catalogue of books printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and British America and of English books printed in other countries, 1641-1700 (STC II).

        The
Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of English Books printed abroad, 1475-1640 (STC I) is the most important guide for the Early English Books, 1475-1640 microfilm collection. (Reference Level 3, Z 2002 P77 1976).  The first two volumes are author indexes.  The third contains indexes to printers and publishers, places of publication other than London, false London imprints, and anomalous imprints, as well as a chronological index.
