English Literature in Transition (Project Muse)

Includes articles on fiction, poetry and drama from 1880 to 1920, and also carries reviews of books about major figures of the period including Henry James, D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. The publisher of the journal is the University of North Carolina, and the authors of the articles are from both American and English institutions. Valuable journal as it covers a short time period of forty years in literature, which means that many authors from the time are featured frequently. Access to this periodical is available online through Project Muse.

 

American Transcendental Quarterly (Proquest)

Peer-reviewed publication focusing on nineteenth century literature and culture. It features studies of literary works and authors as well as other aspects of nineteenth century American culture and society. Valuable resource as its focus is solely on the nineteenth century, not only on works of literature, but also on the prevailing social conditions of the time. Queens College has full-text electronic access of this journal from 1990 to the present.

 

ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance (PS1629 .E6)

This is a major source in the subject area. Its articles are listed in the MLA Bibliography and the American Humanities Index among others. Its scope is limited to nineteenth century American literature. Excellent for those looking for information on American literature in the nineteenth century, since this is its sole focus. Available from Rosenthal library on Periodicals level 1.

 

Dickens Quarterly (PR4579 .D495)

Invaluable for students and librarians wishing to locate articles on the life and work of Dickens. Apart from articles and book reviews, also featured are announcements such as calls for papers and lists of websites of interest. Also included are lists of TV programs and magazine articles that may have appeared on Dickens. Available from Rosenthal library on Periodicals level 1.

 

Nineteenth-Century Literature (JSTOR)

Contains articles on major aspects of nineteenth century literature, examining writers including Thackery and Melville. For articles on nineteenth century literature from around the world, this is an excellent source. At Queens College full-text access of this periodical is available from 2002 onwards.
