Other important course policies
Be sure to take each of the in-class exams, quizzes, and the final exam. Makeup exams/quizzes are given in cases of documented severe personal emergency only, e.g. hospitalization. (Even in that case, note that all make-up quizzes/exams will be given at one time at the end of the semester, after the final exam. The makeup exam/quiz will not be a simple replacement for the quiz/exam you missed, but will cover the entire course, like the final exam, but with emphasis on the material in the exam/quiz that you missed.Grades of INC (incomplete) will be given only in very extreme circumstances (more extreme than the circumstances under which makeup exams are given), in consultation with the chair of the department. Under no circumstances will a grade of INC be given to a student who missed or failed the first midterm exam or the first two quizzes. If you have been doing badly during the first part of the semester, please DROP THE COURSE and take it again next semester.
Cheating on exams, or blatant copying of homework, will not be tolerated and will result in your failing the course. Furthermore, as stated in the 1991-93 College Bulletin:
Students found guilty of any form of academic dishonesty, such as plagiarism or cheating on an exam, are subject to discipline, including suspension or dismissal from the College.Homework assignments are to be done individually. You may ask your friends for advice, but don't let them write actual C++ code for you. The purpose of the homework assignments is to give you the programming practice necessary to do well on the exams. Please put this opportunity to good use.
Homework assignments will count for only 25% of your final grade. So, if you cheat on your homework assignments and manage to get away with it, you will likely do very poorly on the exams and fail the course.
The final grade will based on: 25% homework, 30% quizzes, 45% exams.
This semester, there will be four quizzes. Of these, only the three highest grades will be counted towards your total quiz grade.
The 45% of your final grade that is based on exams will be calculated as follows: There are two in-class exams and a final. The final will count 20% of your total grade. The better of your two in-class exams will count 15%, and the worse of your two in-class exams will count 10% of your total grade.
