Types of Plagiarism

There are different types and degrees of plagiarism. I will describe and illustrate examples of the four most common types:

1. Direct plagiarism: a word-for-word copying without attribution
2. Self plagiarism: submitting your own work as assignments multiple times without acknowledging you're doing so
3. Mosaic plagiarism: borrowing phrases without quotation marks and replacing words here and there with synonyms
4. Accidental plagiarism: neglecting to cite sources without the intent to plagiarize
