MATH 131: Calculus I

Fall 2004

This is the first part of a two-semester sequence intended to introduce the fundamental ideas and techniques of differential calculus to non-science students. Special emphasis is given to examples in business and economics. The course is not proof-oriented but students are expected to gain a good intuitive understanding of the basic concepts of calculus.

• 12/7: In addition to our 3 in-lecture reviews, Dr. Terilla of the Math Department will run a review session on Thursday 12/16 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in Kiely 417. Preference will be given to his students, but all MATH 131 students are welcome to attend in case there is a seat available. In addition, the videotape section of the Math Lab will be open the following hours during finals week:

• 9/23: The final exam will be given on Tuesday December 21 at 11:00 am. This date is assigned by the department and is different from what is in the Fall schedule book.

• 9/12: Because there are no classes on Thursday 9/16, the next homework assignment will be due on 9/21. The homework schedule will return to normal beginning the following week.

• 9/8: Here are the day and evening schedules of Math Lab. Feel free to go there to get extra help!

• 9/7: More news on the textbook: The bookstore has made a mistake in ordering the expanded edition instead of the regular edition that you need. But the first 5 chapters of the two editions are in fact identical, which means if you have the expanded edition, you can use it for this course without trouble. If you do not have the book, either you can buy the expanded edition, or wait a few more days for the problem to get sorted out (there will be contacts between the math department and the publisher on Thursday to solve the problem asap). In the meantime, I'll try to give you the necessary material and put scanned copies of the homework on the web.

• 9/2: Good news! The text is now available from the bookstore. Get your copy before they are gone.

• 9/1: Prof. Maller of the Math Department will be running two TI-83 tutorial lectures on 9/13 and 9/20 at free hour 12:15-1:05, both in Kiely 264. These lectures are sequential. No previous knowledge of the calculator is assumed.

General Information and Ground Rules:

• The class lecture meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:15-1:30 in Kiely 419.

• The course grade is based on the following scheme:

• Homework will be posted on the web every Thursday and will be due the next Thursday at 4:00 pm. Doing homework is an absolutely essential part of this course. You are encouraged to work in groups and discuss the assignments with each other. But the work that you hand in must be your own write up. Please note that late homework will never be accepted.

• If a midterm exam is missed because of a documented illness or valid emergency, the course grade will be determined on the basis of the other work done during the semester. Exams missed for other reasons will count as failures.

• At the end of the semester, everyone who has not withdrawn from the class will receive a grade. Incompletes will not be given to avoid F's.
