MATH 207: Honors Calculus III

Fall 2008

Description and goals: This is a rather rigorous introduction to differential calculus in several variables, with emphasis on two and three dimensional problems. It includes an introduction to linear algebra and, as time permits, glimpses into applications in differential equations and geometry of curves and surfaces. The course is a continuation of Math 157-158. As always, its true prerequisite is the intellectual curiosity to learn about a nice piece of mathematics and the willingness to think.

• 9/20: Click here for a short discussion of solving systems of linear equations and finding inverses of square matrices, which I have taken from volume II of Apostol's book. If you have not studied linear algebra before, this would be a good (albeit short!) introduction. But I recommend reading through sections 16.18 and 16.19 even if you have seen this material before.

There is also an internet supplement which contains some of the proofs that are omitted in the text. For your convenience, you can download this supplement here.

General Information and Ground Rules:

• Class lecture meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:15 - 1:05 in Kiely 277.

• Homework is an absolutely essential part of this course. You cannot master the course material without solving many problems consistently throughout the semester. Homework will be assigned roughly every week and will be discussed in class, as much as time allows. You are encouraged to work together on these problems, but the work that you hand in must be your own write up.

• The course grade is based on the following scheme:

• If a midterm exam is missed because of a documented illness or valid emergency, the course grade will be determined on the basis of the other work done during the semester. Exams missed for other reasons will count as failures.

• At the end of the semester, everyone who has not withdrawn from the class will receive a grade. Incompletes will not be given to avoid F's.
