Professor Sun received her degrees from Nanjing University, Beijing School of Foreign Affairs and the Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include post-socialist political economy and transitional politics of China, ethnic politics of China; comparative economic transition of China, Russia and India; and East Asian Development. She is the author of The Chinese Reassessment of Socialism 1976-1992 (Princeton, 1995), Corruption and Market in Contemporary China (Cornell, 2004), and From Empire to Nation State: Ethnic Politics in China (Cambridge University Press, 2020). She has also published in Comparative Politics, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Current History, Asian Survey, Crime, Law and Social Change, Modern China Studies, Oxford Bibliographies, Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World, and others. She has contributed articles to the New York Times’ Room for Debate forum. She is a recipient of the Presidential Research Award From Queens College.
