ARTFL Project

American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (ARTFL). Searchable collection of French language texts from the 12th to the 20th centuries. At present consists of nearly 2000 texts, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts. Genres include novels, verse, theater, journalism, essays, correspondence, and treatises. Subjects include literary criticism, biology, history, economics, and philosophy.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index

Provides access to current and retrospective bibliographic information and cited references found in nearly 1,130 of the world's leading arts & humanities journals. Also covers individually selected, relevant items from approximately 7,000 of the world's leading science and social sciences journals.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index

Huge index of biographical sketches that now holds over 15 million records. Provides citations of Who’s Who volumes, biographical dictionaries and volumes of literary criticism among others. Very strong in the literature field. Covers historical as well as contemporary figures.

Biography Index

Database from H.W. Wilson with scope from 1984 to the present. General biography source covering over 5,000 publications. Provides citation information and links to full-text where available. Useful feature is that it covers individual’s biographies, journals and memoirs, many by prominent poets.

Book Review Digest

Bibliographic database that cites and provides excerpts of reviews of current English-language fiction and nonfiction books for children and adults. An abstract of each book is also provided. Periodical coverage includes leading magazines from the United States, Canada and Great Britain. There is no limit on the number of review citations included.


Black Thought and Culture


Collection of approximately 100,000 pages of non-fiction writings by major American black leaders—teachers, artists, politicians, religious leaders, athletes, war veterans, entertainers, and other figures—covering 250 years of history. In addition to the most familiar works, includes  a great deal of previously inaccessible material, including letters, speeches, prefatory essays, political leaflets, interviews, periodicals, and trail transcripts.


Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)


Acquisition, research, and reference service that offers more than 1,400,000 MARC records and more than 300,000 reviews of children's books--all full text searchable from 36 review sources. Contains reviews from quality sources including The ALAN Review, BookList, The Horn Book Guide and KIRKUS.


Essay and General Literature Index


Cites essays and articles from anthologies and collections. This database focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film. Indexes collections of essays and miscellaneous works published in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Material indexed includes collections of essays by a single author, collections of essays by different authors, and essays in selected annual publications.


Humanities Abstracts


Cover-to-cover indexing and abstracting of key English-language publications in the literature of the humanities. Provides comprehensive abstracting and indexing of 500 English-language periodicals covering the areas of archaeology, classical studies, art, performing arts, philosophy, history, music, linguistics, literature, and religion.


JSTOR


Provides access to over 600 journals including 100 in the literature field. Tremendous scope as some periodicals are indexed from as far back as the nineteenth century. Searchable full-text. Includes both multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections. The language and literature collection provides electronic access to fifty-eight journals, beginning with volume 1, issue 1, of each. Some titles, such as PMLA, date back to the 1880s.


Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts


Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) abstracts and indexes the international literature in linguistics and related disciplines in the language sciences. The database covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Complete coverage is given to various fields of linguistics including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics. Provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,500 serials publications, and also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, and dissertations.

 

Literature Resource Center

A comprehensive literary collection with author biographies and criticism on the bulk of literary works through time. Built to include information on the most studied authors with over 3,000 author portraits, it is further enhanced by features including more than 500,000 full-text journal articles from more than 260 literary journals, thousands of critical essays, work overviews, plot summaries and explications. Integrated into results are more than 5,000 links to authoritative related Web sites, historical timelines, information about literary movements, genres, themes, time periods and more. Includes two databases that used to be accessed individually, Contemporary Authors and Contemporary Literary Criticism.

Magill on Literature Plus


Magill on Literature Plus combines Magill on Authors and Magill on Literature into one searchable database. MagillOnLiterature is the definitive, online source for editorially reviewed critical analyses. This database also includes brief plot summaries of the most studied works in the history of literature.


MLA Bibliography


The electronic format of the bibliography contains all the entries in the print issues from 1926 to the present. It is searchable by classification headings, document authors, subject-index terms, language of the book or article, journal name, and other elements.  Includes access to over 4,000 journals, with many links to full-text but does not include abstracts.


Multicultural America

Discovering Multicultural America is a thoroughly integrated multimedia reference source that offers information on the culture, history, and current status of America's largest and most often studied ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native North Americans. Provides information on people, significant documents, timeline events, landmarks, organizations, essays, periodical articles, and glossary terms. The information can be accessed through a number of search paths, as well as retrieved through more than 22,000 intuitive hypertext links.

Oxford English Dictionary


Most comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It traces the development of English from approximately 1150 AD up to the present day. The varieties of English covered include British English, American English, Australian English, New Zealand English, the Englishes of the Indian subcontinent, Southern Africa, and the Caribbean, among others.


Project MUSE


Project MUSE contains over 250 full-text journals from 40 scholarly publishers. Project MUSE covers the the humanities and social sciences, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, literature and criticism, political science, gender studies, economics, and others.. The Project MUSE features more than 200 peer-reviewed journals, many with PDF article files.


RAMBI - The Index of Articles on Jewish Studies


Selective bibliography of articles in the various fields of Jewish studies and in the study of Eretz Israel. Material listed in Rambi is compiled from thousands of periodicals and from collections of articles - in Hebrew, Yiddish, and European languages- mainly from the holdings of the Jewish National and University Library. The main criterion for inclusion in the bibliography is that the article be based on scientific research, or contain important information for such research.


Twayne Author Series


Includes in-depth introductions to the lives and works of writers, the history and influence of literary movements and to the development of literary genres. This online series features the content of nearly 600 books that comprise three print series --United States Authors, English Authors and World. Good starting point for research papers on literary works and figures.


Women and Social Movements

This Worldwide Web site is intended to serve as a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. It is organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000. Includes 2,300 documents, more than 800 images, and almost 800 links to other websites.
