Uploading your web page
After you have created a web page, (an
html file), you need to upload it to the web server.
In this case, the web server is qcpages.qc.cuny.edu
Uploading - transferring a file from
your computer to the web server.
Downloading - transferring a file from
the web server to your computer
In our case, we are going to use a
software application called WinSCP to upload and
download files to and from qcpages.qc.cuny.edu
WinSCP encrypts your password when you
connect to the server so it is very secure.
Other web hosts might use FTP (file
transfer protocol) to upload and download files. FTP
is not as secure as SSH but otherwise it is similar to
WinSCP.
Steps to upload a file from your
computer to a web server
- Download and install WinSCP.Mac
users can use Filezilla.
- Launch WinSCP by clicking on the icon.
- Click the "New" button.
- For "Host name"
enter qcpages.qc.cuny.edu
- QC students
should enter your "instr\yourusername"
and "password" and then click "login"
- QC faculty
should enter your "qc\yourusername"
and "password" and then click "login"
- Once you are connected you will see that the
screen is divided in two. One the right side you
will see the web server and on the left side you
will see your computer.
- If you look at the very top of the right side, you
will see the following: /home/username (this will be
your username) This shows you where you are located
right now, after you logged in.
- Below you will see the following: three folders:
bin, documents, and public_html. The only one you
have to worry about for now is the public_html
folder. This is where you will be putting your web
page files.
- Double click on the public_html folder to change
to that directory. If you look at the top right
corner you should now see the following path:
/home/username/public_html This shows that you are
now in your web page directory.
- Now let's transfer your web page file. Look over
on the left. You are probably in the "My Documents"
folder. You can double click on folders to find your
hello.html file.
- To upload your file click on the hello.html file,
then click on the "Copy" button at the lower left
side of the screen. A menu will pop up asking "Copy
file "hello.html" to remote directory
/home/username/public_html/*.* Go ahead and click
the "Copy" button again. You should see the file
transferred.
- Now look over on the right side and you should see
hello.html listed.
