Becoming fluent in academic discourse: Stories from a multilingual campus

This workshop explores the development of fluency in academic discourse, by examining how students perceive this process and what teachers can do to facilitate it. Academic prose (and its discipline specific variations) is a code that none of us speak — or write — natively. We will attempt to identify the hurdles faced by all learners, and the variables that promote success.
Participants receive a $200 stipend and a copy of this year's issue of Revisions. Lunch will be served.

Quantitative Reasoning Across the Curriculum

Weekend Workshops at Bard College

The Writing Across the Curriculum program and The Center for Teaching and Learning are pleased to announce an opportunity for you to attend a series of weekend workshops hosted by Bard College's Institute for Writing & Thinking (December 7 - 9, 2007).
The workshops--on topics as diverse as "Writing & Thinking," "Revolutionary Grammar," and "Reading India's Ancient Texts through Contemporary Indian Politics"--emphasize approaches to using writing as a vehicle for inquiry and understanding. A group of sixteen QC faculty and Writing Fellows attended last December's workshops at Bard--and had rave reviews. It was an excellent opportunity for us all to spend time together in an idyllic setting, sharing ideas about teaching and getting to know each other better.
If you are interested in attending, please send a brief statement of interest (a short paragraph), including your full name and your departmental affiliation, to Scott Cheshire, before Friday, October 26. Expenses for travel, lodging, and meals will be paid by the College. Priority will be given to new faculty.

The workshop will be facilitated by Alfred Guy, R.W.B. Director of the Writing Center at Yale University.
Guy will lead a workshop intended to help faculty find ways to respond to student writing effectively, without spending extra time on feedback.
We'll serve coffee, a light breakfast, and lunch. Faculty participants will receive a $100 stipend for attending.

The Writing Across the Curriculum Program and The Center for Teaching and Learning are pleased to welcome two Associates from Bard College's Institute for Writing and Thinking. Darlene Forrest and Stephanie Dunson will lead a workshop, "Teaching with Writing," for Queens College Faculty on March 23, 2007.
The Bard Institute for Writing and Thinking seeks to improve students writing abilities through challenging, engaging, and effective teacher development programs that focus on the role of writing in teaching and learning. Through workshops, conferences, and on-site consulting the Institute helps teachers to envision classrooms in which writing is a catalyst for learning in all subjects and offers practical guidance in making writing a central classroom practice.
QC faculty who attend the March workshops will receive a
stipend. Workshop seats will be reserved on a first-come, first-
