Calculus (Math 131)

Overview

Math 131 is a first course in calculus for business, economics, and social and life sciences covering limits and derivatives. Prerequisites for Math 131 are any of the following: a grade of C- or better in Math 122, a B- in Math 115, placement via a math placement exam, a score of at least 80 on Sequence 3 or Math B regents, or at least 600 on the math SAT.

Practical information

The class is scheduled to meet in Kiely 326 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Section 09 meets 5:00--6:15 and Section 10 meets 6:30--7:45.

The textbook

The textbook for the course is Calculus 11th ed by Hoffmann, Bradley, Sobecki, and Price. The syllabus is basically chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Coursework and course grades

Homework, announcements, solutions to tests, etc... will be posted on the webpage. It is each student's responsibility to read the text, do the homework, and get his or her questions answered.

Course grades will be determined by scores on eight in class exams and a final exam. The lowest two in-class exam scores will be dropped.

The in class exams are scheduled for: Feb 9 Feb 14, Feb 28 Mar 2, Mar 9, Mar 21, Apr 6, Apr 25 Apr 27, May 4, May 16.

Also, be aware of the CUNY Academic Calendar. In particular, our class is not scheduled to meet on Tuesday April 11, Thursday, April 13, Tuesday April 18, or Thursday April 20. In addition, our class will not meet on Tuesday, February 21.
