MATH 143 Homework Assignments

The Math Department is using the second edition of Stewart’s Essential Calculus textbook. If you buy a brand new hard copy of the book, you will receive a printed access card which allows you to enroll in WebAssign, where you can also access the e-book (and print chapters if you wish). You are also paying for the use of the WebAssign homework management system which offers online homework and a whole lot of other support.

The Math Department recommends purchasing the textbook + WebAssign access directly from Cengage, the publisher, which should be cheaper than the bookstore. Visit the following page for information on available packages specifically designed for Queens College:

Stewart Calculus on Cengage

To access WebAssign after purchase, visit their login page. On the right side of the screen, click on I HAVE A CLASS KEY, then enter the key that I provide to you in the beginning of the first lecture. The class key is the institution code followed by two sets of four digits, so it has the form

qc **** ****

Once the key for this class (Math 143 Section 01) is recognized, the system asks you to create an account by choosing a username and password. For convenience you may choose the same username as your QC account.

For your convenience, here is a quick guide on how to start using WebAssign.

Online assignments will be posted roughly every week. The system can be set up to send you automatic notifications when new homework is uploaded. You should complete each assignment before the due date, but you can do this in several sessions, saving your partial work each time. Some questions require entering an answer and others are multiple-choice. For the first type of questions, you are given 5 chances to submit the answer. For multiple-choice questions, the allowed number of submissions is one less than the number of choices. Note that the numerics of each question may be randomized (that is, for each student a random set of numbers may appear in the question).

Feel free to email me if you have questions or problems with using WebAssign.
