MATH 143: Calculus III

Description and goals: This is the last part of the three-semester sequence 141-142-143 intended to introduce techniques of integration and basic theory of infinite sequences and series. The course is not proof-oriented but students are expected to gain a good understanding of the concepts of calculus and to be able to apply them in concrete problems. • 9/30: A comment on the notation: In the textbook and on WebAssign, the average $(2M_n+T_n)/3$ is called $S_{2n}$ and not $S_n$. That means when you estimate an integral using the calculator program for (say) $n=6$, the returned value is what the book calls $S_{12}$. To find $S_6$, simply enter $n=3$. Note that this adjustment is needed for Simpson's rule only.

• 9/19: Here is a copy of the TI numerical integration program that I talked about today, in case you want to create it yourself (of course if I downloaded the program on your calculator today, you don't need this anymore). It will give the five approximating sums $L_n,R_n,T_n,M_n,S_n$ for a definite integral.

General Information and Ground Rules:

• Class lecture meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:40 - 2:55 in Kiely 277.

• Homework is an absolutely essential part of this course. You cannot master the course material without solving many problems consistently throughout the semester. This course uses WebAssign, an online homework management system.

• Quizzes will be given roughly every Thursday during the last 15 minutes of the lecture. The question(s) will be based on the material of the previous week's assigned homework. You should make every effort to take all the quizzes, as it will directly affect your course grade. At the end of the semester, your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

• The prerequisite for this course is MATH 142, and it is not open to students who have passed or are taking MATH 151. If you do not meet this requirement, you should not be enrolled in this class. Please go to the Math Department office (Kiely 243) and seek advice.

• If a midterm exam is missed because of a documented illness or valid emergency, the course grade will be determined on the basis of the other work done during the semester. Exams missed for other reasons will count as failures.

• At the end of the semester, everyone who has not withdrawn from the course will receive a grade. Incompletes will never be given to avoid F's.
