ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT


INS regulations state that this type of employment can be immediately authorized for any student in lawful F-1 status. After you have found a job on campus, apply for on-campus work authorization at ISS. Student eligible to work 20 hours a week while attending classes and up to 40 hours during winter, spring and summer recess and vacation periods.

*Written authorization for employment is required by the campus office that employs you and by the Social Security Office.

To work on-campus, you must be in valid F-1/J-1 visa/immigration status. This means you must:

For F-1/J-1 international students, on-campus work authorization is valid for part-time employment (20 hours or less per week) during the Fall and Spring semesters and full-time employment (40 hours a week) during school holidays and summer recess.

J-1 scholars, researchers and/or faculty may work up to 40 hours per week in their respective academic fields.

On-campus employment authorization must be renewed each semester prior to expiration date of previous work period listed on the On-Campus Employment Authorization Form.

To obtain written permission to work on campus, bring the following items with you to the International Student Services Office:

  1. your passport. Passport must be valid through duration of work period.
  2. your Queens College I-20(s). NO PHOTOCOPIES.
  3. a letter or application from the on-campus office that wishes to hire you. The employer's letter must be on campus office letterhead and indicate salary, number of hours working per week, beginning and ending dates of employment, a brief job description, and supervisor's signature.
  4. *valid Social Security Card. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A VALID SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, THE ONLY WAY THAT ONE CAN BE OBTAINED IS BY RECEIVING WRITTEN EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION FIRST. THIS MEANS BRING ITEMS 1, 2 AND 3 ABOVE TO THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE BEFORE APPLYING FOR THE SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.
EMPLOYMENT BY YOUR SCHOOL.
On-campus work performed for your school is always acceptable, whether it is employment in your academic department, the library or the computer center. Work required by a scholarship or assistantship and work at other City University of New York campusses are also acceptable.

OTHER EMPLOYMENT ON YOUR SCHOOL'S PREMISES.
Work performed on your school's grounds for an outside contractor or firm is considered to be on-campus employment as long as the employer provides direct services to students. Examples of this might be your school's food service or bookstore, if they are operated not by your school but by an outside firm.

WORK OFF CAMPUS WHICH QUALIFIES AS ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT.
This is also known as "Pilot Off-Campus Employment Program". This includes research foundations, institutes and laboratories affiliated with the college.
