OVERVIEW OF COMMENCEMENTNOTE: The day will be fully detailed in the "Information Grid" included with your first mailing in early April 2009. Queens College Commencement Day is a wonderful and memorable occasion. It begins at 9 AM with the College-wide ceremony (about 2 hours) on the Quad (the grassy plain in the center of the Campus). This is followed by many Divisional & Departmental ceremonies. The day ends with many (but not all) Departments holding receptions and parties. For specific information please contact your department. DIVISIONAL & DEPARTMENTAL EVENTS FOR 2009About 30 minutes after the College-wide Quad ceremony ends, many Divisional or Departmental ceremonies are held. They usually last an hour or less and are conducted by Divisional Deans or Department Chairs. THE ONLY CEREMONY WHICH WILL REQUIRE TICKETS WILL BE THE DIVISION OF EDUCATION CEREMONY IN COLDEN AUDITORIUM. TICKETS WILL BE ISSUED BY THE DIVISION OF EDUCATION (NOT BY THE COMMENCEMENT OFFICE). For specifics on obtaining education tickets Click Here.
The Commencement Office will try its best to answer all your questions in the materials you will be sent in April and May 2009. If you carefully review these materials, you and your guests will have an enjoyable experience. Graduates who reply that they plan to attend will be sent a final mailing in early May. It will include final instructions, a procession "Line-Up Card", two maps showing procession routes and seating. (Give a copy to your guests.) Extra maps will be available at the Commencement Office.
THE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY IS HELD ONCE A YEAR. The next is Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 9 AM on the Quad (Rain-or- Shine). IF YOU FILE A GRADUATION APPLICATION WITH THE REGISTRAR IN A TIMELY MANNER (see deadlines below), you will receive a letter in early April from the Commencement Office giving full details and inviting you to participate. GRADUATION APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN JEFFERSON HALL 100. IF YOU DO NOT FILE WITH THE REGISTRAR (ON TIME) YOU CANNOT GRADUATE. DEADLINES FOR FILING FOR GRADUATION

If you do not file by April 1, you can still take part in the ceremony and your name will appear in the 2010 program. CAPS & GOWNS They can be pre-ordered online up to midnight April 1, 2009 (for pick up at the bookstore) at: http://www.herffjones.com/college/graduation/ Bachelor candidates must wear black cap, tassel & bachelor gown. (Women also wear white collar which should be pinned on.) Masters candidates wear black cap, tassel, masters gown & appropriately colored hood. (Bookstore knows color). Women masters do not wear white collar.
If you have a black cap & gown, you do not have to purchase. The items above are non-taxable.
Cap tassels are worn on the right front side of the cap, and are switched to left at conferral of degrees. Caps tend to slip. Hair pins will help. The bookstore will also have the following available:
* Prices include tax Bookstore payments: Payments may be cash, check (with student I.D.) payable to “QC Bookstore”, American Express, Discover, Master Card or Visa. (Bookstore Phone 718-997-3573). Note: The bookstore will have a sales table behind Jefferson Hall on Commencement Day. GOLDEN KEY INTERNATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY STOLES Call Bookstore (997-3573) for dates ring companies will be on campus. PROGRAMS Graduates receive programs in assembly areas when they line up at 8:25 AM for procession. Guests obtain programs from tents on the Quad.
THE QUAD COLLEGE-WIDE PROCESSION: The Graduate procession includes 4 lines of march. Masters will be assigned to their appropriate line and march at the head of the column. Bachelors must choose the Division with whom they wish to march. (Most choose to march with their majors.) Please be sure to return the Reply Card which will be mailed to you in early April 2009.
SUNSHINE PLAN Our Commencement goes on rain-or-shine. If raining or the weather is threatening, rain ponchos will be distributed to those who march. We request that you wear the poncho over the gown. It is assumed your guests will dress for the weather and bring umbrellas if necessary. If it rains, the program will be shortened. If it is raining heavily at line-up time, all processions will form indoors (as shown below) and wait for instructions. The signal to line up indoors instead of outdoors will be the flying of a white "rain flag" on the Quad flagpole. The college website and switchboard (718-997-5000) will also advise if the rain plan is in effect. If we have to line up indoors, please be extra attentive to the Marshals and security who will be relaying instructions to you. NOTE: THIS 2009 PLAN MAY BE MODIFIED FOR 2010.
CONFERRING OF DEGREES Note: Many graduates will have the opportunity to "walk on stage" at the events immediately following Commencement.
