Introduction to the language of the web, HyperText Markup Language (HTML) Most web pages are simple text files that have a filename extension of .html or .htm. For purposes of this tutorial we will make all of the file extensions .html HTML allows us to take simple text and "mark it up" so that it appears the way we want it when viewed with a web browser. The way we mark up the text is by using html "TAGS". Usually there is always an opening tag and a closing tag. For example, let's mark up the following quote from Mark Twain: If I want to use html tags to make the word "Education": bold, I would do the following: <B>Education</B>: that which reveals to the wise, and conceals from the stupid, the vast limits of their knowledge.
