David Gerwin is Associate Professor in the Department of Secondary Education at Queens College/CUNY (1997-present) where he co-coordinates the social studies program. Research interests include teacher research in social studies, teacher professional develop-ment, and discipline specific ways that schooling policies such as high-stakes testing or specific lesson plan formats alter history teaching. Recent publications include "The Freedom To Teach" (forthcoming, co-authored with a teacher) and "A Relevant Lesson: Hitler Goes to the Mall" (both in TRSE), and Teaching US History As Mystery (Heinemann), co-authored with Jack Zevin. A significant amount of his time is involved in professional development projects with local teachers, recently through the Teaching American History Grants Program, and lesson plan development for the web in an NEH-funded CUNY program with historians, teachers, and education faculty. He has chaired the Academic Freedom Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies. Visiting faculty, Hebrew University Melton Center, 2004-2005 (sabbatical).
