About Bach to School

Our mission is to introduce youngsters attending elementary schools in the borough of Queens to hearing live classical music during the school day in their own schools. Beginning in the Spring 2011 semester, we began taking a variety of chamber ensembles featuring advanced music students of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College to a number of elementary schools in the community. Our aim is not only to expose the students to classical chamber music but also, as Leonard Bernstein did with his “Young People’s Concerts” of the 1960s, to give them a degree of historical context for the music played as well as to help them understand the musical ideas presented. To this end, our performers, many of whom are themselves studying to become music teachers in the public school system, present a brief talk about their instruments, the composers, and the pieces to be played during the concert, asking the students in the audience to listen for distinctive features of the pieces: repeated themes, ‘conversations’ between particular instruments, etc. The interactive nature of these concerts, we believe, is an important way of building listening skills in our young audiences. What we are trying to do is to plant the seeds for an appreciation of classical music founded on some understanding of it. And, of course, we want our audiences to enjoy the experience!
In our inaugural season, we gave concert/lecture/demonstrations at five elementary schools in Queens featuring the Q.Q. (Queens College’s Saxophone Quartet), the Q.C. Baroque Trio and the Q.C. Percussion Ensemble. (See the link for “Concert Schedule for details of forthcoming concerts). The response from our young audiences, excerpts which you can read by clicking on the link “Praise for “Bach to School”, was overwhelmingly positive, which has made us eager to expand the program. We have presented these concerts thanks in part to a grant from the Queens College Foundation.
