Music Minor

The music minor is a program for non-music majors offered to supplement their major or to pursue an interest in music. There are three options for the minor:

Music Theory (21 credits):

In the music theory minor, you will learn about concepts of music theory like scales, intervals, and harmony. You will also be exposed to sight singing and some keyboarding.
The placement exam is required to declare this minor.

Requirements:

  • Music 171: Sight Singing 1 - 3 cr
  • Music 172: Sight Singing 2 - 3 cr
  • Music 173: Theory 1 - 3 cr
  • Music 174: Theory 2 - 3 cr
  • Music 101: History Survey - 3 cr
  • 2 semesters of large ensemble (Choir, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra) - 1 cr each
  • Electives (6 credits)

 

Music Literature (18 credits):

In the music literature minor, you will learn about music throughout history, across cultures, and in specific contexts. Some topics include Jewish Music, History of Film Music, and Women in Music. The topic is dependent upon the professor. Check CUNYfirst for each description.

Requirements:

  • Music 1: Intro to Music - 3 cr
  • Music 121: Writing - 3 cr
  • Large Ensemble Optional (Choir Wind Ensemble, Orchestra) 1 cr each

 

Music Production (24 credits):
