Biographical Information:
Dr. Sherry Overholt, Director of Vocal and Opera Studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music has combined a long and successful career of operatic and concert performances with teaching positions at Queens College, Purchase College and The Curtis Institute of Music.

Dr. Overholt built the voice and opera department at Queens over the last 15 years and has guided and vocally mentored many students to national and international careers. Her current and former students have sung at the Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Merola Opera, Glynebourne, and numerous regional opera houses. As a performer Ms. Overholt has sung title roles at Virginia Opera, Kentucky Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Toledo Opera, Indianapolis Opera in the roles of Gilda, Violetta, Mabel, Student Prince to name a few. For 10 years Ms. Overholt sang with Columbia Artist Management’s Community Concerts in Joint Operatic Recital performing over 300 concerts nationally and internationally. She sang with the Baltimore Symphony and Portland Symphony as well as numerous other orchestras. Her love of American opera and song comes from her mentoring by Metropolitan Opera soprano Phyllis Curtin at Yale and at Tanglewood.

She has recorded the three World Premieres: Burning Bright by Frank Lewin, in 2002 for Albany Records; the premiere of Vincent Persichetti’s Song Cycle Harmonium in 2013, and, Legacy of Songs, a continued recording of unpublished works by Persichetti in 2015. As a teacher, Dr. Overholt has also for the past 10 years been the Artistic Director and Founder of the Queens Summer Vocal Institute for Emerging Young Artists and High School Students at Queens College. For the past 15 years she has been the Founder and Artistic Director of the Westchester Summer Vocal Institute for young professionals.

She adjudicates for the Fulbright Foundation, Classical Singer, National Opera Association and gives masterclasses year-round. Dr. Overholt has been passionate about mentoring young students as a college professor for over twenty years. Her dedication, wisdom and experience at The Aaron Copland School help provide young artists with the tools and technical foundation at the undergraduate and graduate level and guides them further to the next level of concert and operatic successes.
