OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT


Employment Based On Economic Hardship.
F-1 Students are eligible to apply for off-campus work due to some unforeseen economic hardship, only if the student is unable to locate employment on campus or through the Pilot Off-Campus Employment Program (click here for more details).
Student eligible to work up to 20 hours a week while attending classes and up to 40 hours a week during winter, spring and summer recess and vacation periods.

Employment due to economic hardships general procedures:

  1. Pick up the materials needed at our office. Read and complete all attached materials.

  2. It is important to note that you and your sponsor are responsible for indicating the reason(s) you need to work. You and your sponsor will need to state the unforeseen financial circumstances that you both encountering, i.e. increase in tuition, unexpected medical bills, death in family, increase in expenses for other family members, decrease in value of foreign currency, limitation of amount of foreign currency that can be sent to the U.S., and natural disasters (hurricanes, tornados, etc.).

  3. Both student and sponsor must provide evidence of the unforeseen circumstance , e.g. medical bill, death certificate, proof of tuition increases, bankruptcy or failing business, increase in books, lab fees, computer needs, etc.

  4. Also attach proof of your sponsor's current financial status (bank statements and affidavit of support).

  5. Students who claim that their sponsor is not able to give them any money or have no sponsor at all are not eligible for hardship employment.
    International students on F-1 visas are supposed to have sponsorhip at all times. That is why the U.S. Consulate wants to see proof of sponsorhip prior to obtaining the F-1 Visa.

  6. Make sure you send a $100 check or money order (INS Processing Fee) along with all other documents. Make check or money order out to Immigration and Naturalization Service.

  7. Sign line 11 of the I-20 AB.

  8. Make photocopies of all documents to keep for your records. Materials can get lost in the mail and at the INS Office. If you have no record of your application you will need to file a new one with an additional fee.
    The International Student Services Office can not photocopy or mail documents for student applicants.

  9. See the * marks below.
    The items marked with * beside them are those you will need to return to the Queens College International Student Services Office for review and then mail to the INS Office in Vermont.

    * Copy of Visa Stamp
    * Copy of passport's validity
    * Check/Money Order for $100
    * Evidence of Financial Resources

    * Two *Photographs for EAD Card
    *Photos should be "green card" style - meaning it shows ¾ view of your face, with the right ear showing on white background. All photos must be 1½" X 1½" (in inch).

  10. After being reviewed, mail enclosed documents "certified mail return receipt requested" to:

  11. Allow 6 weeks for a response.

  12. WARNING!
    • DO photocopy the entire application before mailing.
    • DO send it certified mail, return receipt requested.
    • DO be prepared to wait. Processing time is indicated above.
    • DO notify the ISSO if you have not received a response in six weeks.
    • DO write your check or money order to the "INS".
    • DO NOT mail your passport with this application.

    • DO NOT visit INS in person.
