Master of Music Theory Quiz (Classical)
All Master of Music Classical Performance Programs applicants are required to take the theory quiz, and pass the exam.
There are three parts to the theory quiz for MM applicants:
Part 1. Key signatures. You will be asked to supply the key signatures for several major and minor keys. A treble clef is given.
Part 2. Triads. You will be asked to build major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads. For each triad, the root is given. There are no key signatures. You will not be allowed to add key signatures, only accidentals.
Part 3. Dissonant chords and their resolutions within a key. Several four-note chords are given in SATB spacing, using treble and bass clefs. A key is given for each chord. You will be asked to identify the chord using Roman numerals, figured-bass numerals, or some combination of the two. Then you will be asked to resolve the chord in the simplest and most typical way.
