Undergraduate Concentration in Composition

The composition concentration is intended to aid undergraduate students who have shown commitment and attained a level of skill in music composition in improving their skills and widening their knowledge of contemporary techniques and practices. Queens College music majors may be admitted to the composition concentration on the basis of compositions submitted for approval. The work submitted shall be examined by a committee of faculty composers who shall report recommendations to the Director. Advanced standing in theory is not necessarily required, but a certain level of technical skill is usually expected. Interested students may apply by submitting copies of their compositions to the committee.

Music 329, Composers Workshop, and Music 330, Undergraduate Tutorial in Composition, are the basis for the concentration. They are designed to increase the student's abilities in composing and his or her awareness of current trends and problems in composition, in the current music world, and the place of the composer today.

Requirements: In addition to the requirements of either the Bachelor of Arts music major or Bachelor of Music program, the following requirements and stipulations apply:

  1. After admission to this course sequence, all requirements of the music major shall apply except as specifically noted below.
  2. Students admitted to the composition concentration take Music 329, Composers Workshop, every semester.
  3. In order to complete the sequence, each student must prepare a composition for performance at a regularly scheduled student composers' concert at least once before graduation.
  4. Students in the concentration may take Music 374 (Twentieth-Century Techniques) concurrently with Music 373 (Harmony and Counterpoint 5). It is recommended to take 374 with an instructor other than their composition teacher.
  5. Students who complete one or more semesters of Music 330, Composition Tutorial, are exempted from Music 378, Composition.
  6. A minimum grade of B in both Music 329 and 330 are required to remain in the concentration.
  7. Seniors in the concentration may request admission to Music 729, the first graduate course in compositional techniques, if they have completed at least two semesters of Music 330. Their enrollment in this course must be approved by the Graduate Advisor. Upon completion of Music 739, students may take Music 730, its sequence, if approved by the Graduate Advisor.

Music 329: Composers' Workshop (2 hours every other week, 1 credit).
Prerequisite: permission of the School of Music, or admission to the concentration program in composition. A course for students active in musical composition. There will be performances and critiques of student works and examination of other works of importance to contemporary composers. This course is also open to advanced performers seeking experience in the coached performance of new music.

Music 330: Undergraduate Composition Tutorial (one-half hour of private instruction; 2 credits).
Prerequisite: admission to the Concentration program in Composition. May be repeated for credit. Corequisite: Music 329, each time Music 330 is taken. Weekly private lessons with a faculty composer. Students may request their instructor from the composers on the faculty, subject to approval of the School of Music.
