Algebra Math 333 Syllabus
Overview
Math 333 is a course in abstract Algebra. It is assumed that students have a very good working knowledge of linear algebra and have some mathematical sophistication.
Assignments
This section will be updated often.
- Due 9/4. I scaled this first assignement back a little bit. Read all of sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 of the textbook. Do exercises 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6. Read sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4.
- Due 9/11. Read all of section 2 and do exercises 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5
- No class Wednesday 9/18
- Due 9/23. Exercise 2.5, 2.6, 2.11. Read section 2.8 about canonical decomposition carefully and understand what Theorem 2.7 says for the function f:Z -> {0,1,2,3,4,5,6} defined by f(n) = remainder when n is divided by 7.
- Due 10/7. Read the first section in chapter II. Do exercise 1.6 on page 49.
- Here is the first exam: math333_exam1.pdf and my solutions: math333_exam1_solutions.pdf
- Due 10/16. Read the first section in chapter II. Do exercise 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.12 on page 48-49. Write up your solutions neatly. I'll collect them on Wednesday, October 16.
- Due 10/21. Do exercise 1.7, 1.8, and 1.14 in II.1 and any problems previously assigned that you haven't completed already. Write up your solutions neatly and turn these in on 10/21.
- Due 10/23. Read section II.2
- Due 10/28. Do exercise 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 in II.2. Write up your solutions and turn them in on 10/28.
- Due 10/30. Do exercise 2.9, 2.19 in II.2. I forgot to collect the assignement on Monday. So, on Wednesday, I'll collect solutions to the following two problems: Exercise 2.4 and 2.19 in II.2.
- Due 11/4. Write up solutions to Exercise 2.4, 2.9 and 2.19 in II.2 and turn them in on Monday 11/4. Also read section II.3.
- Due 11/11. Read section II.4. Do exercises 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 4.10, 4.12. Remember, there is an exam on Wednesday 11/13.
- The exam on Wednesday 11/13 will cover sections 2.7, 2.8 in Chapter I and sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 in Chapter II. This material is on pages 15-17 and pages 41-70 in the book.
- Here is the second exam: math333_exam2.pdf and my solutions: math333_exam2_answers.pdf
- Due 11/25. Read section II.6 about Subgroups. Do exercises 6.1, 6.2, 6.4, 6.7, 6.13, 6.15, 6.16. Carefully write up solutions to 6.13 and 6.16 and turn them in on Monday 11/25.
- Due 12/02. Finish studying section II.6 about Subgroups. Do exercises 6.1, 6.2, 6.4, 6.7, 6.13, 6.15, 6.16. Carefully write up solutions to 6.13 and 6.16 and turn them in on Monday 12/02. Read section II.7 on quotient groups.
- Due 12/04. Finish reading section II.7 about quotient groups. Do exercise 7.1 and 7.2.
- Due 12/09. Do exercise 7.11 and 7.14. Read Theorem 8.1, Corollary 8.2 in section II.8.1 and all of section II.8.5 (definition 8.12, Lemma 8.13, Corollary 8.14, and Examples 8.15, 8.16, 8.17). This is only about 2 pages total--read them carefully!
- The final exam is on Monday, December 16 from 11:00--1:00. The homework problems already assigned, and the problems on the first two exams, are good review problems. Here are a few more problems that concentrate more on the newer material: review_problems.pdf
- Here is the final exam: final.pdf and my solutions: final_solutions.pdf. Have a good break and best wishes for all your future work!
